104 Panel: Supporting Integration of Behavioral and Physical Health Services Using Alternative Payment

Many patients with chronic physical health conditions – such as COPD, coronary artery disease, and diabetes – also face mental health-related co-morbidities (such as depression) for which they are not being adequately treated. This often stems from no health insurance and/or access to mental health services, or little coordination between mental health and clinical health providers; there may also be a lack of recognition that a mental health condition is occurring alongside the clinical condition. Addressing mental health needs could have significant effects on patients’ ability to follow their clinical care protocols and achieve improvements in their overall quality of life and health outcomes. This session will explore the opportunities and challenges in serving patients who need both physical health and mental health care, and how alternative payment models are being used to re-align payment in a way that supports patients in receiving care that meets both their physical and mental health needs.
