Director of the School for the Science of Health Care Delivery in the College of Health Solutions, Arizona State University

 

Dr. Riley was appointed director of the School for the Science of Health Care Delivery in the College of Health Solutions at ASU in January, 2013.  He was previously the associate dean for the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota. He teaches process engineering, health care quality and safety design, and health finance.

His research areas are health finance, quality improvement and patient safety with several nationwide and international projects currently underway. In these capacities, he has had extensive experience developing and implementing effective quality control systems, as well as leading numerous process improvement initiatives. Dr. Riley is currently the principle investigator on a multi-year nationwide interdisciplinary study of physicians, nurses, and administrators to improve perinatal patient safety and develop innovative safety training programs funded by the Agency for HealthCare Research and Quality (AHRQ); a project to identify, develop and deliver a comprehensive skills training for the Main Blood Bank, the Ministry of Public Health, Afghanistan; and a five year study for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to examine high reliability teams in public health emergency preparedness during critical incidents for state health department emergency operations centers.

Dr. Riley received his PhD from the University of Minnesota, School of Public Health. He is a former health care executive with more than 20 years of experience in organizations such as the Pacific Medical Center, in Seattle, WA, the Aspen Medical Group in St. Paul, MN and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota in St. Paul, MN.
