9A: Improving the Delivery of Cardiac Care Via Episode Payment: Opportunities and Challenges

Unlike traditional fee-for-service (FFS), clinical episode payment seeks to take into consideration the quality, costs, and outcomes for a patient-centered course of care over a set period of time and across multiple settings. Research suggests that when payments for health care are based on the care delivered in a clinical episode, the result is increased coordination of care, enhanced quality of care, and less fragmentation in the medical system. This leads to better experience and health for patients and lower costs for payers and providers. Applying this model to improve care and outcomes for patients with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) creates significant opportunities as well as important challenges.

Attend this session to hear from experts like Dr. Jason Wafsy, CEP Work Group member and Director of Quality and Analytics and Outcomes Research, Mass General Heart Center, who will describe the CEP Work Group’s episode payment recommendations related to Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) care.  Following Dr. Wafsy will be Sarah Burstein from the Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute, speaking on HCI3’s work to advance episode payment in all areas, including cardiac care.
