Brian Wheeler (Practice Consulting Group) Mr. Brian R. Wheeler currently serves as the Vice President of the Practice Consulting Group for CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield’s landmark Patient-Centered Medical Home program. In this role, he leads a team of more than 30 consultants who work with 4,500 Primary Care Physicians collectively responsible for a population of 1.2 million people who generate $5.6 billion in annual health care spending.
Prior to assuming his role with the Practice Consulting group, Brian spent eight years reporting directly to the progressive CEO of CareFirst. In this role, he worked with every division of the company serving as an internal management consultant, change agent, program troubleshooter, and strategic advisor.
Brian gained experience in various areas of the health care sector for over 20 years. He began his career in various management roles in the commercial ambulance industry – working first for a regional firm and then for Rural/Metro Corporation, a private, multi-national provider of fire and ambulance services. These experiences provided Brian with a comprehensive view of the health care industry from a Provider’s perspective.
Brian was then recruited to join the founding management team of an angel and institutionally backed start-up company, LifeLinkMD, providing services to the medical device industry. Through several rounds of private equity funding all the way through to profitability, Brian served as the President and COO of this company until its sale to the Medtronic Corporation, subsequently serving as Medtronic’s Director of Professional Services.
He has served on several non-profit and community Boards of Directors over the years and currently serves on the Boards of the Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce and the CareFirst Associates’ Political Action Committee.
