Kate Neuhausen (Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services)

Dr. Katherine Neuhausen is a board-certified family physician and the Chief Medical Officer of Virginia Medicaid. She is responsible for designing and implementing clinical and pharmacy guidelines, procedures, standards and controls for the Virginia Medicaid program, which serves over 1.1 million low-income Virginians. She develops and implements clinical and pharmacy initiatives and innovations that improve patient outcomes and decrease costs across the Medicaid Fee-for-Service and Managed Care delivery systems. She provided clinical leadership in developing and implementing the Addiction and Recovery Treatment Services (ARTS) program, a national model for integrating evidence-based addiction treatment into Medicaid Managed Care. She also led the implementation of the CDC Opioid Prescribing Guideline across Medicaid Fee-for-Service and Managed Care health plans, which resulted in a significant decrease in opioid pills prescribed and spending.
