Reid B. Blackwelder, MD, FAAFP, is a member of the Health Care Payment Learning & Action Network’s Guiding Committee. He is Professor, Family Medicine at the Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) in Johnson City, Tennessee. He also serves as Director of the Medical Student Education Division for the Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Blackwelder has been advocating on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system, specifically to implement effective team-based patient-centered care. He is past President and immediate past Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), which represents almost 120,000 physicians, residents, and medical students nationwide. Dr. Blackwelder previously served as Program Director of the Kingsport Family Medicine Residency Program of ETSU for more than 13 years. He is on the steering committee for the Interprofessional Education and Research Committee at the ETSU Health Sciences Center, which is developing innovative approaches to team-based education and care. Dr. Blackwelder graduated from Haverford College in Pennsylvania and received his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. He completed his residency and a teaching fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia.
