Discussion of payment reform occurs nearly exclusively in the adult population. There are however, examples of success in pediatric populations. Creating successful payment models for children has particular challenges for pediatrics yet the solutions could be universal. Challenges for pediatric populations include: children are generally healthier so fewer opportunity to identify cost savings – and therefore shared savings; care models must broadly include the family caregivers; and cost-savings often occur over a longer period of time – despite the fact that the ROI on many interventions could have long term implications for not only the child and their family – but for society over the course of the child’s life.
